Star Trek is all about boldly going, but when it comes to boldly stopping, things are more of a mixed bag. Over the past 60 years, the space-faring franchise has taken the form of 13 different TV series, not to mention a multitude of movies. As each of these shows has focused on a Starfleet ship (or, in one case, spacestation) and its brave crew, the focus tends to be on the journey rather than the destination. And yet it's important to stick the landing, too, as Star Trek's many series finales found out.
Discounting the short-form anthology series Short Treks, and the currently ongoing Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy, there have been 10 Star Trek series finales to date. Some of them comfortably stand alongside the finest sci-fi TV episodes of all time, while others . . . don't. Several finales ended things on such a high that they cemented their respective series as true fan-favorites that stand up to endless rewatches. Meanwhile, a certain few stained their shows by crashing at the final frontier hurdle. From cursed holodeck episodes to time-traveling triumphs, here is every Star Trek finale to date, ranked by quality.
Strange New Worlds' season finale marks Star Trek's 60th anniversary by sneaking in an unexpected link to The Original Series' pilot.
'60s television shows didn't have the grand finales audiences are used to today, with series simply ending their runs on whatever episode happened to be produced last. Whatever happened, then, The Original Series was never going to have a series finale that particularly stood the test of time.
