Two months after launching a no-download demo for Crimson Desert on Twitch, Pearl Abyss is shouting from the heavens about the positive impact of the experimental ad format.
Since August 31, gamers have been able to navigate to a dedicated Twitch page to play an in-browser demo of Crimson Desert that drops players directly into the middle of the narrative for about 20 minutes of gameplay that loads in under three seconds, without requiring a download. The demo is the result of a direct partnership between Crimson Desert studio Pearl Abyss and Amazon Web Services, powered by Amazon’s GameLift Streams product.
“We don’t have a demo for the game anywhere, because on our side, for security sensitivity purposes, we don’t want to put the code out there that someone might be able to reverse engineer and crack it,” said Pearl Abyss public relations and marketing director Will Powers in an interview with GamesBeat. “So, this presented a really interesting option of how we can do a demo of the game for pretty much anyone that has a PC, without compromising any security on our side.”
So far, Crimson Desert’s no-download demo appears to be serving its purposes well, according to numbers shared by Powers and AWS global head of games industry business development Shayan Sanyal. Average playtime in the experience so far is about 5 and a half minutes, with the majority of players playing for over 5 minutes. During the campaign, the Twitch demo has consistently been among the top one or two trackable links driving traffic to Pearl Abyss’s Steam page, with roughly 60 to 70 percent of demo players coming from the Americas.
