Zach Cregger's Resident Evil showed that the source material isn't a poisoned chalice and that adaptations can work, becoming not only the highest-rated movie in the franchise by a wide margin, but the highest-rated video game movie of all-time. And yet, just a month later, it has been dethroned.
Chandler Riggs, who played Carl in The Walking Dead, directed and starred in a 19-minute Resident Evil 7 fan film that was released earlier this week on the RE Biohazard channel, and it has already soared to an average IMDb rating of 8.3 out of 10, the highest in the series.
It's a bizarre coincidence that Chandler Riggs and Austin Abrams, who played Ron Anderson in The Walking Dead and shot Carl in the eye, have now starred in two of the highest-rated Resident Evil movies back-to-back. Turns out, dying in The Walking Dead is great for your Resident Evil career.
Following the release of his 19-minute Resident Evil 7 fan film, Chandler Riggs held an AMA on the series' subreddit, where fans wasted little time asking whether he'd be up for adapting more Biohazard or taking on another game entirely. Riggs is clearly passionate enough to say yes, but bankrolling another project out of his own pocket is a much harder sell.
"I'd really love to, but the amount of time, resources, and energy it took for this, with so much money out of my own pocket and not being able to make any money back on it, makes it tough to justify doing it again," Riggs said .
