Bungie plans to expand Marathon beyond its original extraction shooter format, according to a new official update outlining several changes planned for the game's immediate future. The broader shake-up, set to roll out over the coming months, is intended to help Marathon recover from its current player slump by becoming more broadly accessible.

The first phase of Bungie's newly announced plan will arrive with an October 2026 refresh of the extraction shooter's ongoing second season, Nightfall, which began in June. The overhaul will mark another reset of Marathon's player progression tracks and in-game economy while simultaneously updating rewards, bringing back a rotation of returning game modes, and a variety of smaller changes. It also follows Bungie's recent move away from rigid seasonal release schedules, with future updates instead paced according to the scope of the work and what the development team can reasonably support.

A much larger step is planned for December 2026 with the Symbiosis update. Its headline additions include Marathon's first permanent PvE mode, an experimental Team Deathmatch option, a substantially reworked Perimeter zone, and Bishop, a new speed-focused shell centered on melee combat. Bungie is also developing a revamped onboarding experience and a social space featuring a firing range. Symbiosis is intended to serve as the foundation for an even broader March 2027 update that will more closely connect the game's PvE, PvP, and PvEvP content.
