Brandon Sanderson's adult fantasy books are set in the sprawling Cosmere universe, where godlike beings fight for power on planets with their own complex rules for magic. The Mistborn series takes place in the world of Scadrial while The Stormlight Archive is set on Roshar. Characters and plots from the two cross over with those from Elantris’ Sel and Warbreakers Nalthis.
The sheer number of interconnected books Sanderson has written can make getting into the Cosmere feel intimidating, but he’s created a solution in the Hoid’s Travails series. That began with the releases of Tress of the Emerald Sea and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter in 2023, the standalone books can be read in any order. The only connection to the vast Cosmere is Hoid, the storytelling trickster who appears in most of Sanderson’s works.

The next book in the series, The Fires of December, releases digitally on Oct. 6 and physically on Dec. 6. It was part of a BackerKit campaign last year for a Hoid’s Storybook Collection that raised $11 million. It’s the only Cosmere book the exceptionally prolific author is releasing this year as he focuses on the Mistborn film adaptation, co-writing the modern fantasy book Songs of the Dead, and continuing his YA sci-fi Cytoverse series with Blightfall.
The Fires of December follows a young woman who wakes up with the memories of an entire lifetime. They propel her on a journey along a river made of paint-like demon blood to warn the king about a coming plague.
