BioWare might be gone, and its in-development Mass Effect game is canceled, but there are still reasons to celebrate the studio and its flagship series this N7 Day. Not just new merch, which can be a little dicey now that we don’t know where that money’s going, but also a documentary detailing BioWare’s last two years that isn’t connected to EA at all.
First reported by Deadline, Canadian filmmakers Shane Fennessey and Adam Scorgie have been working on the doc since 2024. Titled Massive Effect: The BioWare Story, the documentary will include interviews with pretty much all of the key figures behind the studio’s success. Fennessey and Scorgie were granted behind-the-scenes access, meaning they have almost certainly captured details about the now-canceled Mass Effect Universe that would have potentially never been revealed if it weren’t for this film.
A new report suggests that Mass Effect: Universe was still years away from launching after development paused to shift focus to The Veilguard.
Even though filming for Massive Effect began two years ago, the doc aims to tell BioWare’s entire story, from its inception in 1995 right up until its closure. It’s unclear if those making the documentary were in attendance when EA announced it was closing the studio. At the very least, the film is going to cover the tumultuous last two years those left at BioWare have been through as they continued to work on Mass Effect Universe during incredibly uncertain times.
Some of the key BioWare figures confirmed to have been a part of the documentary include the studio’s three founders, Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip, as well as Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect director Casey Hudson, female Shepard actor Jennifer Hale, BioWare directors Mark Darrah and David Gaider, and Game Awards host Geoff Keighley.
