For over a decade now, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has remained the crowned king of narrative-driven open-world RPGs. It combines an immersive dark fantasy world and expansive freedom to explore with superb storytelling, where every main or side quest can prove completely unpredictable and hinge on your choices. Add in Geralt’s distinctive monster-hunting profession into the mix, and The Witcher games remain among the most definitive open-world RPGs ever made.

Naturally, The Witcher 3’s critical acclaim and blockbuster status have influenced countless games since 2015. With the game poised for its grand return on September 29 and the brand-new Songs of the Past DLC following later in 2027, now is the perfect time to see which other open-world RPGs have come closest to what The Witcher offers.
