Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto series ended its run in November 2014, and two years later, on May 9, 2016, the Boruto series officially began. When Boruto began, Kishimoto was involved in its production, but it was primarily written at the time by Ukyo Kodachi and illustrated by Mikio Ikemoto.
With time, Ikemoto became the main writer as well as the illustrator of the Boruto series, while Kishimoto simply approved the plots that the former wrote for the franchise. Now, a multitude of Boruto plot points risk being retconned by Masashi Kishimoto himself, as he announced his return to Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump with a new Naruto sequel manga, titled Naruto: Shadow Rising. Quite a few of the drafts of Naruto: Shadow Rising have already been revealed to us, and some of them directly retcon what was shown in Boruto.
The Naruto manga ended its run in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump after 15 long years of serialization, which made it one of the most widely beloved manga series in the entire world. Naruto defined a generation alongside other hits such as One Piece, which is why its ending hit many fans incredibly hard in 2014. When Kishimoto did not want to write a sequel to the story himself, many fans were devastated, and when the quality of Boruto failed to live up to the standard Kishimoto set, it became even harder on the fans.
"It's kind of like a prayer. To keep enduring until it comes to be, no matter what.
