Wings of Theve’s tense atmosphere and evolved mission design make it one of the best in the series.

Much like Missile Command, if you listen past the accurate roar of MiG engines and the screams of your squad mates in Ace Combat, you can hear a ticking heart underneath it all. There is a pulse that reflects fear, grief, and helplessness in war. The series has spent decades exploring how conflict affects people, iterating on these ideas far more than Missile Command ever could. It has become a long-running attempt to articulate what war games have been circling for fifty years, made clearer and more profound through emerging technologies and refined cinematic language. At the height of an operation, when everything finally aligns, Ace Combat clicks in the same way. You find the right combination of control and timing, and suddenly you’re flying above the whole mess.

The series once felt like a hobby project for its developers, a place to experiment with new 3D technology, photogrammetry, and officially licensed aircraft.
