Science fiction has produced some of the greatest TV shows ever made, but maintaining that quality is another matter entirely. Ambitious mythology can be impossible to untangle, mysteries can quickly lose their appeal when answers start arriving, and sometimes shows simply overstay their welcome. Even some of the classics of the genre have at least one season that fans would rather not revisit.
That makes the sci-fi series that avoided a bad installment particularly impressive. The bar is deliberately high; even The Twilight Zone, widely considered the greatest science fiction story of all time, had an uneven fourth season after expanding its episodes to an hour. Lost also proves that "no bad seasons" doesn't mean "no divisive seasons" – its later years are fiercely debated, but there's enough great television in each to keep it in contention. From modern mysteries to completed classics, these six sci-fi shows belong to an unusually exclusive group of elite series that never went downhill.
Great science fiction shows like Stargate Universe and Dark Matter deserve to be discussed way more than they currently are.
Lost was such a cultural phenomenon that it spawned years of speculation, theories, and community engagement. The survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 become stranded on a mysterious island in Season 1, but through each episode and season, Lost steadily transforms from a familiar survival story into an enormous sci-fi story involving the DHARMA Initiative, electromagnetic phenomena, time travel, a smoke monster, and an intricate mythology that viewers spent six seasons trying to make sense of.
