Revenge stories are nothing new in the world of action RPGs. After all, nothing can get the blood pumping quite like a good ol' personal vendetta. However, although revenge might sound satisfying on paper, some titles are very good at reminding us that obsessively hunting someone down rarely ends well. Some protagonists lose the people they care about most, while others sacrifice parts of themselves while being consumed by the desire for revenge.
Most importantly, those who get exactly what they've always wanted often discover that although balance may be restored, revenge cannot magically bring back everything that was taken from them. What's worse, some protagonists end up losing themselves along the way, on top of everything else they had already lost.
You may not believe it, but Velvet Crow was not always the revenge-driven, angry protagonist you are used to seeing in Tales of Berseria. She used to be a kind woman who cared deeply about her family, especially her sick younger brother, Laphicet. One night, behind Velvet's back, Laphicet sneaks off with Artorius, his brother-in-law, and sacrifices himself as part of Artorius' plan to awaken Innominat during the Scarlet Night, believing that his death could help create a better world for his sister.
Velvet tries to save him, but it was too late. The events surrounding the ritual transform Velvet into a Therion, leaving her with a demonic left arm capable of devouring daemons, and Artorius imprisons her. After three years, she finally escapes, but she can only think about one thing: finding Artorius and getting revenge.
