223,000+ people sign petition to "save Mass Effect"

Over 223,000 people have signed a petition asking EA to "save Mass Effect."

EA announced on October 21 that it was closing down Mass Effect and Dragon Age developer BioWare after more than 30 years, ending development on the next Mass Effect project.

In response, over 223,000 people have signed a Change.org petition asking EA to "take decisive action" by "committing to the continued development of Mass Effect."

"We are urgently petitioning EA to take decisive action by committing to the continued development of Mass Effect," wrote the petition starter, Joe Smith.

"This commitment requires proper funding, adequate staffing, and time allocation to maintain and advance the high standards the franchise is known for."

The petitioner added: "Alternatively, EA could consider licensing the Mass Effect intellectual property (IP) to another studio that shares the passion and vision to keep it alive and allow it to flourish anew."

EA has not publicly commented on the fates of BioWare's biggest franchises beyond confirming the next Mass Effect game had been cancelled.

The closure came less than three months after EA completed its acquisition by PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners on August 4.

The EU Commission cleared the $55 billion acquisition of Electronic Arts led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund in July.
