Everyone loves a good video game villain, with strong motives and vicious methods. So often we see great games squander the opportunity for a solid antagonist, or just not develop one very well, leaving us disconnected from the central conflict. However, there's another end to that spectrum that's also unpleasant.
Some might say it's even worse when a video game has a great villain who really draws you in and keeps you invested, only for them to appear in a lackluster final boss fight that lets them down. All that development leading up to the climax is wasted. It rarely taints the overall experience up to that point (a great game is a great game, after all), but it certainly leaves you feeling underwhelmed when the credits roll.
Naturally, there will be spoilers ahead, so stop reading if you want to play these games unspoiled: Batman: Arkham Asylum, The Evil Within, The Witcher 2, Control Resonant, Cyberpunk 2077, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, or Fable 2.
Everything about the relationship between Batman and The Joker in Batman: Arkham Asylum is so perfect, and then the Clown Prince of Crime, who has been playing mind games with Bats all game, goes and gets really jacked. The Joker's plan (if he ever really had a plan; that's kind of his thing), I guess, involved luring Batman to this arena and then dosing himself with Titan serum, the same stuff Bane uses to get real big and strong.
