TBC Georgia has introduced the country’s first palm payment service, allowing shoppers to pay for purchases using a scan of their hand rather than carrying a bank card, mobile phone or cash.
The biometric technology links a customer’s unique palm characteristics to a selected bank account, with transactions authorised by scanning their hand at participating retailers.
Customers must first register at a location equipped with a dedicated palm reader. They can then use the TBC Georgia mobile banking app to scan a QR code and select the account they want to connect. Once enrolled, they can make payments by presenting their palm at any participating outlet.
The launch marks another development in Georgia’s digital payments market, as banks and retailers increasingly explore biometric technology to make everyday transactions quicker and more convenient.
TBC Georgia’s latest move follows its recently announced partnership with American Express, which aims to expand the acceptance of American Express cards across the country. The agreement will allow more retailers to accept the cards both in physical stores and online, giving consumers additional payment options and helping businesses reach more customers.
The bank said both initiatives form part of a broader strategy to develop its payments ecosystem, increase choice for consumers and businesses, and accelerate the adoption of financial technology in Georgia.
TBC Georgia serves retail, micro, small and medium-sized enterprise (MSME), and corporate and investment banking (CIB) customers. 2 million monthly digitally active customers across Georgia and Uzbekistan, where it operates TBC Uzbekistan.
