Turning AI investment into business value is emerging as the next challenge for companies deploying the technology, according to Senior Minister of State Tan Kiat How.
Speaking at NVIDIA AI Day Singapore, Tan highlighted commercialisation as companies look for clearer returns from AI spending.
“The next constraint on AI growth may not be what AI can do.
It may be about how quickly organisations can turn what AI can do into economic value,”
He argued that businesses need to move beyond standalone tools and rethink workflows around how people and AI can work together.
Tan pointed to Sea, which is applying AI across Shopee, Monee and Garena. At Shopee, AI is being used to improve product listings, discovery and seller decision-making.
He also noted that many AI projects struggle to move beyond pilots because they still need to integrate with existing systems, operate reliably and deliver enough value to scale.
“What matters is not simply that AI is being used. It is that the way work is done is changing,”
Singapore is also using initiatives such as SEA-LION and its National AI Missions to test AI applications in areas including finance, healthcare and advanced manufacturing.
The government wants to scale applications that can demonstrate measurable value in real-world settings.
