Quantum risk puts digital asset insurance under scrutiny

Project Eleven, a post-quantum security company focused on digital assets, has partnered with Relm Insurance to explore how quantum-resistant security measures could influence insurance assessments for institutional digital asset custody.

The development partnership will focus on Project Eleven’s Strongpoint custody product, examining how institutions’ preparations for quantum computing threats could be evaluated within existing digital asset insurance frameworks. The initiative aims to establish a clearer understanding of how post-quantum security controls could factor into future assessments of institutional risk.

Quantum computing presents a potential challenge for digital asset security because a sufficiently powerful machine could derive private keys from exposed public keys, potentially compromising assets. This prospect is prompting institutions to consider how their custody infrastructure can adapt its cryptography before such a capability becomes available.

Strongpoint is designed to support this transition by combining conventional and post-quantum signing methods. Its architecture separates institutional controls from the cryptographic layer, allowing organisations to replace signing algorithms while retaining their existing approval rules and audit history.

The partnership will investigate several areas relevant to insurance underwriting, including exposure involving cryptographic keys, signing systems, transaction approval processes, readiness for cryptographic migration and dependencies on third-party providers. The findings are intended to help both companies assess how these factors could be considered when evaluating digital asset risks.

Relm will also contribute to the design and development of Strongpoint, providing an insurance perspective on how institutional custody infrastructure can support risk assessment. The work will inform the product’s approach to security controls and auditability, as well as the evidence institutions may need to demonstrate their post-quantum preparedness to insurers.
