The Pittsburgh-based bank said it would add more than 50 locations in South Carolina and Georgia and named its retail chief to the CFO role, effective in March.
It’s become something of a November tradition for $627.8 billion-asset PNC to bolster its branch opening plans as it pursues a national strategy.
A year ago, PNC said it was adding another 100 branches to existing expansion plans, bringing its total to 300 new locations by 2030. That followed the lender’s November 2024 announcement it was doubling its new branch target, to 200 by 2029.
“When the music stops, you have to have critical share if you want to be a real retail player in the country,” Demchak said Friday at the BancAnalysts Association of Boston conference.
“We’ve got to do this today because the game is going to end. I think there’s only four or five players that even realize a game is going on,” Demchak said, “and we’ve got to be a winner that comes out of the back end of that.”
PNC has about 2,400 branches; its expansion plans now stand at about 370 new locations by 2031. The bank has targeted cities in the Southeast, including Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville and Orlando; the Southwest, including Austin, Dallas, Houston and Phoenix; and Chicago.
Friday’s update signals the bank’s intention to dig deeper into the Southeast. PNC will build branches in South Carolina markets Greenville, Charleston, Columbia, Myrtle Beach, Spartanburg and Hilton Head, as well as in Savannah and Augusta in Georgia.
