Japan has nearly 3,900 listed companies, yet over 70% of TOPIX Small Index stocks have no analyst coverage, and English research is even more scarce. Because research is costly and brokers have little incentive to cover thinly traded stocks, many companies remain invisible to global investors.
Beluuga Research is more than AI-generated English summaries of Japanese disclosures. Its foundation is beluuga.ai, a platform for investment bankers and PE professionals that structures financial data directly from regulatory filings, with source-level traceability and deterministic calculations.
It handles Japan-specific challenges such as company-specific XBRL extensions, differing accounting standards, and inconsistent reporting formats, so research rests on structured data rather than interpretation of documents alone. Reports cover fundamentals, valuation, opportunities, and risks; combining data infrastructure with AI makes broad coverage economical while preserving source traceability.
Unlike sell-side research, it covers companies regardless of size, liquidity, or institutional following.
“Research coverage should not be dictated by a brokerage firm’s commercial interests,” said Shinji Takeuchi, Founder and CEO, a Morgan Stanley alumnus with nearly 30 years in investment banking. “Generative AI alone is not enough to produce reliable financial research. What matters is the quality of the underlying data and the analytical infrastructure behind it.
