VW’s Electric Polo GTI Just Got Faster. Thank The Customers

Volkswagen’s first electric GTI has picked up some extra speed before reaching customers. Apparently, potential buyers had a say in how fast it should go. The ID. Polo GTI now tops out at 118 mph (190 km/h), up from the 109 mph (175 km/h) we reported previously. Volkswagen attributes the new maximum to customer feedback.

Pre-sales opened on October 7, with German pricing starting at €39,995 ($44,900), slightly higher than the earlier indication that it would start just under €39,000. Maximum WLTP range also edges up from 424 to 431 kilometers, or around 268 miles.

There’s more detail on the equipment, too. Adaptive dampers for the lower suspension and progressive variable-ratio steering are standard. A steering wheel-mounted GTI button adjusts the drive, steering, suspension, sound, and instrument cluster graphics together.

Optional Connected Travel Assist can recognize red lights and automatically stop the car when adaptive cruise control is enabled. The options list also includes massaging front seats, a panoramic roof, and 425-watt Harman Kardon audio.

VW is also offering a specially developed performance tire for the GTI’s 19-inch wheels. The release doesn’t name the supplier or quantify the improvement, but it’s an option worth watching because it promises extra grip and potentially higher cornering speeds.

The specs of the single front-mounted electric motors remain unchanged. It makes 223 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque channeled to the wheels through an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, and draws from a 52-kilowatt-hour usable battery.

8 seconds. Charging peaks at 105 kW, with a quoted 24-minute stop to go from 10% to 80%.
