Volkswagen Group China has been granted permission to test highly automated Level 3 driving on public roads in Hefei. Through this testing, VW aims to advance development to achieve the targeted technical maturity by 2027. Meanwhile, Xpeng has received approval for demonstration drives with Level 4 robotaxis in Guangzhou.
Volkswagen has begun testing highly automated driving assistant at SAE Level 3 after receiving approval in China. The Group is trialling the technology in real-world traffic in the city of Hefei and collecting extensive data. The approval marks another step towards Volkswagen’s goal of bringing Level 3 technology to series production as planned in 2027, using technology developed in collaboration with local partner Horizon Robotics in the joint venture Carizon.
At Level 3, the vehicle can take over driving under defined conditions. The driver is then allowed to take their hands off the steering wheel and look away from the road but must be ready to resume control when prompted by the on-board computer — typically within ten seconds.
To attain this level of autonomous driving, the Group is expanding its expertise in automated driving in China. Local development will benefit from an in-house AI world model called GAIA 2.0. According to Volkswagen, this model can already perform daily simulations covering around five million kilometres, based on data from 30 million real-world traffic scenarios. In the long term, the technology should pave the way for higher levels of automation.
Xpeng has taken a step further with its robotaxi project. The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer has received approval to conduct demonstration drives with Level 4 robotaxis in Guangzhou.
