The recall campaign for Volkswagen Group's electric cars due to potentially defective battery cells is now also expanding to Audi – albeit only in the USA for the time being. Around 9,000 units of the Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron are now being recalled in the United States.
Strictly speaking, Audi has decided to initiate a “voluntary safety recall”, ordering exactly 9,048 electric vehicles in the US to return to workshops. These vehicles are equipped with a specific batch of battery cells from Hungary. Although no incidents have been reported in practice, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that battery fires cannot be ruled out. Affected vehicles should therefore be charged to no more than 80% for the time being.
In detail, the recall involves 7,040 Audi Q4 e-tron from the 2024 and 2025 model years, built between 4 December 2023 and 24 April 2025, and 2,008 units of the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron — also from the 2024 and 2025 model years — produced between 30 November 2023 and 22 April 2025. In both cases, the models are manufactured by Audi’s parent company Volkswagen in Zwickau. Audi still does not have its own production facility in North America, and its Mexican plant primarily builds internal combustion engine vehicles and hybrids. As a result, electric cars bound for the US market are still produced in Europe — in this case, in Zwickau, Germany.
At this stage, it is still unclear whether a recall for Audi’s electric vehicles is also pending in Europe.
