Volkswagen’s affordable ID. Polo wins German Car of the Year 2027 as EVs dominate

Volkswagen’s new ID. Polo took the overall title of “German Car of the Year 2027,” starting at just €24,995 ($28,000).

After winning in its class among entry-level models (up to €25,000), the VW ID. Polo beat out strong international competition to take the top spot as German Car of the Year for 2027 among all vehicles.

The Volkswagen Group has won two years in a row with a compact EV. Last year, it was the Skoda Elroq.

Volkswagen opened orders for the ID. Polo with the 52 kWh battery at the end of April. In July, it added the entry-level model with the 37 kWh battery, starting at just €24,995 ($28,000) with a WLTP range of up to 207 miles (334 km).

The Life and Style variants are also available with the 37 kWh battery, starting from €29,195 ($32,500).

With DC fast charging speeds of up to 90 kW, the ID. Polo with the 37 kWh battery can recharge from 10% to 80% in about 23 minutes.

The prestigious award “confirms what the ID. Polo stands for,” VW brand CEO Thomas Schäfer said. He added the entry-level EV “brings electric mobility to where it can make the greatest impact: right into people’s everyday lives.”

Since orders opened at the end of April, Schäfer said “well over 50,000 people have ordered their ID. Polo.”

As the first of what the company calls “a true Volkswagen again,” the ID. Polo is the first to bear an established name and the brand’s new Pure Positive design language.
