Volkswagen is putting development of the electric ID. Golf on hold as it looks to rein in spending. The automaker disclosed the decision today in its latest financial update, admitting it needs to be more careful about where it allocates its money amid a challenging business environment.
David Powels, VW brand and Brand Group Core CFO, confirmed the move while discussing the group's financial performance for the first nine months of the year. "One specific measure is therefore to temporarily pause development work on the future ID. Golf at the VW brand until we can securely accommodate the necessary investments," he said.
It's an unusual move for a carmaker that has repeatedly emphasized the importance of electrification, especially when the model in question carries one of the industry's most recognizable nameplates. However, VW is clearly prioritizing financial discipline over pushing ahead with a costly new electric model before the money is available.
Just so we're clear: The announcement doesn't mean the ID. Golf has been canceled. VW describes the suspension as temporary, leaving the door open to resume development once it secures the necessary funding. Still, there's no indication of when engineers will get back to work or how much this latest setback will affect the launch schedule.
The ID. Golf was always expected to arrive later this decade, but delays around VW Group's upcoming Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) have complicated its development. The next-generation architecture was originally intended to underpin a wide range of electric vehicles across the group, but software challenges and mounting development costs have pushed its rollout back.
