AMG Lithium has commissioned its new Performance Lab "PerLa" in Frankfurt, Germany. The company aims to test sulfide solid electrolytes under more realistic conditions in complete laboratory cells and further develop them with customers.
AMG Lithium is expanding its development activities for solid-state batteries with a new laboratory at its Frankfurt site. The laboratory space is increasing by 250 to around 1,100 square metres. The centrepiece is a glovebox line that can replicate the entire manufacturing process of laboratory cells under controlled, inert atmospheric conditions.
This includes the production of electrode pastes, coating, cell assembly and, finally, packaging as pouch cells. The company says more than 200 test stations are available for electrochemical investigations.
The real advancement, however, lies less in the additional laboratory space and more in the ability to test its own materials under application-relevant conditions. AMG Lithium can now not only characterise its solid electrolytes at the material level but also examine them in complete battery cells using standardised test protocols.
This is intended to facilitate joint development projects with customers in particular. AMG Lithium is thus positioning itself more strongly at the interface between material development and cell validation, although this does not include industrial cell production.
AMG Lithium is developing sulphide solid electrolytes for future solid-state batteries in Frankfurt. Such materials are intended to replace the liquid electrolytes in today’s lithium-ion cells. The technology fundamentally promises advantages in energy density and safety but continues to face challenges in material stability, cell integration and industrial manufacturing.
