Upfitting a UTV or Pickup for Wildfire Season

Work vehicles rarely leave the dealer finished. Fleets add ladder racks, toolboxes, utility bodies and light bars. In dry or fire country, a growing number of owners add one more item: a water tank with a pump.

That upfit is now available in an electric form. Skid units from makers such as BLZ Fire Skids drop into a utility task vehicle (UTV) bed or pickup box. A 24-volt battery runs the pump, and the host vehicle can recharge it while running. The result is a vehicle story as much as a fire story.

Payload, range, mounting and handling all change once several hundred pounds of water ride in the back.

Two numbers on the door-jamb sticker matter most. Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the most the loaded vehicle may weigh. Payload is what you can add on top of the empty vehicle, people included.

Water is the heavy part of any skid. Each gallon you add puts about 8.3 pounds in the bed. BLZ lists its Ranger 60 at roughly 300 pounds dry. Fill its 60-gallon baffled tank and you add close to 500 pounds more. That puts the working load near 800 pounds before anyone climbs in.

EV pickups make this step more important, not less. Their battery packs are heavy, so payload varies widely between models and trims. Never assume a figure from a brochure. The sticker on the truck in front of you is the one that counts.

The right vehicle depends on where the fire is likely to be.
