Tsuyo seeks incentives for EV conversion kits, says policy support can unlock demand
The startup says subsidies for batteries and conversion kits could improve the economics of retrofitting existing vehicles, particularly commercial fleets.
Tsuyo believes commercial vehicles could be an important market for conversion kits, as extending the operating life of existing vehicles can improve their residual value and reduce the need for fresh vehicle production.
Tsuyo Manufacturing has called for government incentives for electric vehicle (EV) conversion kits to boost demand and accelerate the electrification of India’s existing vehicle fleet. The startup believes EV conversion should be considered a separate segment within the government's electric mobility push, with subsidies for batteries and conversion kits. Currently, the government has rolled out multiple schemes, such as PM E-DRIVE and the PLI Scheme, to promote the manufacture of new vehicles. Advt
“The government has to recognise electric vehicle conversion as a serious segment for consumers. If they can give a heavy subsidy, at least on the battery side, this segment can really explode,” Vijay Kumar, Founder and CEO, Tsuyo Manufacturing, told the media.
The electric-motor manufacturing startup has manufactured conversion kits for the Bajaj RE three-wheeler and Tata Ace light commercial vehicle. However, they are yet to be commercialised. Kumar said the conversion opportunity could extend across two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers, allowing existing vehicles to continue operating with electric powertrains rather than being scrapped or replaced.
