XCMG debuts new, fully autonomous electric terminal tractor [video]

The new XCMG SDA411 concept terminal truck is fully electric, has no cabin, and an L4 autonomous tech stack that’s purpose-built for unmanned logistics – and, if XCMG get their way, it looks like the future of drayage truck operations.

Whether you call them terminal trucks, yard dogs, or anything else, these heavy-duty trucks do work that’s ideally suited to electrification. It’s all low-speed, high-torque, short distance, precision operation, all the time. And the quiet, vibration-free, instant power operation of electric drive is in its element.

Chinese equipment brand XCMG gets it, and they’re taking the electric terminal truck concept a step further with the debut of an all-new, cab-less design that’s 100% autonomous.

“With no cab and an L4 autonomous driving system, the platform is purpose-built for unmanned logistics,” said XCMG, on LinkedIn. “Its 360° perception system enables autonomous navigation, obstacle avoidance, task execution and parking, supporting continuous mixed-traffic operations in demanding environments.”

That same post included a video showing the SDA411 make its way around XCMG’s campus, making some emergency stops, and pulling up to a charger for a human attendant to plug it in (I guess they haven’t heard about Fortescue’s trick with the KUKA welding robot, yet). You can check out the post for yourself, below.

As for the autonomous aspect, while I generally side with labor and humanity over management and technology, there’s some truth to the industry claims that young people don’t want to drive trucks anymore, even with the promise of six-figure salaries.
