Tata Motors PV eyes smaller cities to drive Aeris compact sedan demand

The automaker sees stronger personal-buyer demand for compact sedans in smaller cities, with the segment expected to grow 4–5 per cent over the longer term.

Shailesh Chandra, MD & CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle, addressing the media at the car's launch.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles , now branded as Tata.Cars, expects India’s smaller cities to drive demand for its newly introduced compact sedan Aeris. This automaker seeks to address a stronger pool of personal buyers for the body style in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets. The company believes that demand for personal compact sedans is relatively stronger in smaller cities, where affordability and aspiration continue to influence vehicle purchases. “Tier 2, Tier 3 cities, I think, have a stronger demand for personal compact sedans because of affordability, because of aspiration. There is a clear section of customers who are looking for a compact sedan, and there is a section of customers who have been looking for compact sedans but have moved to SUVs,” Shailesh Chandra , MD & CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle, said while addressing the media at the car's launch. Aeris, which will replace the Tigor, is positioned for personal customers, which account for around 65 per cent of compact-sedan demand, while the remaining 35 per cent comes from fleet buyers served through the Xpress range. The intervention comes at a time when SUVs account for more than half of overall auto sales in recent months.
