Some Automakers Want Chinese Cars Banned From America For Good

Chinese automobile sales are booming in Europe. Here in the United States, however, the sale of Chinese vehicles is effectively banned. And a handful of major automakers would like to see this become a permanent ban.

As it stands now, Chinese automakers face a 100 percent tariff on electric vehicles. Chinese automakers are also forbidden from selling here in the US due to data and security concerns.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation wants US lawmakers to enact legislation to permanently ban Chinese automobiles in the United States. According to Reuters, the lobbying group pushing for this ruling cites "China's pattern of unfair behavior" and national security risks as its main grounds for opposition.

The group represents a number of automakers and parts suppliers. They work on behalf of these companies to change or introduce federal policies. John Bozzella serves as CEO and leads the collective of companies working to effect such change. Bozzella cites the massive growth of Chinese auto sales in Europe as an indicator of what could happen here in the US.

European car shoppers have already purchased well over a million vehicles year to date in 2026. That has automakers like General Motors, Volkswagen, and Toyota eager to prevent such a scenario here.

While a potential data security risk sounds extremely problematic, the notion of more affordable options would be very appealing to the average US car shopper. And it's not like our home-based automakers aren't also involved in a bit of data deception.
