Seattle plans to add up to 200 public curbside Level 2 EV charging stations by 2030, and residents can now request one near their home or apartment.
For apartment dwellers and anyone who parks on the street, that’s a useful alternative to making a separate trip to charge. More than half of Seattle’s homes are apartments or condos, according to City Light. Older houses and houseboats can also lack somewhere to plug in off the street.
Seattle City Light and the Seattle Department of Transportation are targeting neighborhoods with the fewest charging options.
The chargers are intended for topping up while parked near home. Seattle says its Level 2 curbside EV charging stations can add around 12–30 miles of range per hour, depending on the vehicle and equipment. All the new locations will be open to the public.
City Light currently charges $0.21 per kilowatt-hour at its Level 2 chargers. At that rate, adding 30 kWh would cost $6.30. Using the utility’s estimate of about 3 miles per kWh, that’s roughly 90 miles of range, depending on the EV and driving conditions.
The expansion follows a 2023–2024 pilot at 31 locations, which SDOT says drew strong use and positive community feedback. Seattle’s installations will be funded by the transportation levy voters approved in 2024.
Residents can request a curbside charger through City Light’s program page . Applications will remain open through fall 2027, with locations reviewed and selected on an ongoing basis. The city will consider charging gaps, environmental and equity goals, and whether a site has the electrical infrastructure needed for installation.
