Rivian EVs Are Becoming Ghostbusters This Halloween

Rivian has a bit of history when it comes to fun, Halloween-inspired software updates for its electric cars, but this year, the California startup is really going above and beyond.

The company partnered with Sony Pictures to bring the Ghostbusters universe to all R1 and R2 EVs on the road, topping it all off with a full-on R1S Ecto-1 replica and a promo video starring none other than Bill Murray, who starred as Dr. Peter Venkman in the original Ghostbusters movie from 1984.

For Rivian owners, the Halloween software update comes with several sound and visual effects that can be activated from inside the car or from the Rivian smartphone app. The Lights & Sounds option pairs custom exterior LED sequences with Ghostbusters-inspired soundscapes. Drivers can choose between Ecto-1, Proton Pack, Slimer, Ghost Trap, Peter Venkman, or Random. In true Halloween spirit, owners can also enable Motion Mode, which lets the vehicle react with sounds and lights when someone walks by.

Custom lock sounds are also part of the pack. First-generation R1 owners can swap the stock sound to Ecto-1, while R1 Gen 2 and R2 drivers can choose between Ecto-1, Proton Pack, or Chant.

The interior displays also get a Ghostbusters makeover. Opening the Ghostbusters in-vehicle app while parked pulls up a retro command console with a big red toggle switch that controls the whole experience, syncing interior lighting, themed audio, and exterior displays.

Flipping the Trick or Treat Mode on takes over the driver and rear displays and starts playing the Ghostbusters theme song.
