Petrol’s loss is CNG, hybrid and EV’s gain as PV market shifts in India

During H1 FY27, petrol vehicles’ share in the PV market decreased from 45.95% in April to 41.27% in September while CNG/LPG, hybrid and EVs collectively increased their share from 36.66% to 41% during the same period.

The narrowing dominance of petrol-powered vehicles in the market signals a shift in consumers’ preference towards alternative-fuel vehicles.

There is a new trend emerging in the Indian passenger vehicle (PV) market, with petrol vehicles steadily losing ground even as the market share of CNG, hybrids and electric vehicles (EVs)grows faster. An analysis of FADA data reveals that petrol/ethanol vehicles’ share in the PV market decreased from 45.95 per cent in April to 41.27 per cent in September. In the same period, CNG/LPG, hybrid and EVs collectively increased their share from 36.66 per cent to 41 per cent at the cost of ICE vehicles. Advt

The narrowing dominance of petrol-powered vehicles in the market signals a shift in consumers’ preference towards alternative-fuel vehicles. “Petrol is losing share, not buyers. In July, petrol registrations still grew about 4 per cent, while the market grew 19 per cent, CNG 38 per cent and EVs over 80 per cent,” Saharsh Damani, CEO, FADA told ETAuto . In September, both petrol/ethanol and CNG/LPG, hybrids and EVs combined stood at around 41 per cent, bringing the two sides effectively to parity.

Petrol under pressure The decline in preference for ICE vehicles has been a gradual shift rather than a sudden collapse.
