Pennsylvania allocates $37m for more than 500 new EV charging ports

The US state of Pennsylvania has announced a multimillion dollar investment in public EV charging infrastructure. This will fund 515 new charging ports across five counties as part of the federal NEVI programme.

The funding covers Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, and is expected to increase the number of publicly accessible chargers in the region by 27 per cent. Installations will range from on-street AC charging to DC fast-charging installations at shopping centres, car parks and retail locations. In Philadelphia itself, the number of available chargers could rise by up to 53 per cent.

A significant proportion of the investment will focus on neighbourhood charging; for example, charging provider It’s Electric PA has received $2.93 million to install 157 on-street Level 2 charging ports in 13 neighbourhoods across Philadelphia. Voltpost has also secured funding for on-street installations in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties.

Several larger DC fast-charging projects will also receive support. Positive Energy received the largest individual grant worth $7.22 million, which it will use to install 54 fast-charging ports at 11 Philadelphia Parking Authority car parks. Meanwhile, PNE Solutions America was awarded $4.47 million for 24 ports across five locations, while Wawa secured funding for installations in several counties.

“The Shapiro Administration hit the ground running with EV funding and the results speak for themselves,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “Under the Governor’s leadership, Delaware Valley residents and travelers will soon have access to more than 500 new EV chargers in their communities.”

The latest awards come under Pennsylvania’s NEVI Community Charging programme, through which the state is directing more than $100 million in federal funds towards public charging infrastructure in local communities.
