With a long-travel suspension and turbos from the R35 GT-R, this heavily modded mid-size truck is a hardcore desert runner.
In true SEMA fashion, Nissan’s aim for the Frontier Ronin concept was to create an “unstoppable off-road truck.” To that end, the automaker stretched the limits of the Frontier platform’s performance in terms of both the truck’s powertrain and off-road capabilities.
The Frontier’s 3.8-liter V-6 is still present under the hood of the Ronin, but Nissan also made a host of notable changes. For starters, the Ronin features forced induction in the form of the R35 Nissan GT-R’s twin-turbo setup, which is mounted in the rear.

The engine is fed air through a set of custom intakes and kept cool thanks to a custom front-mounted intercooler system. Exhaust gases are sent rearward via a NISMO Off Road exhaust with three-inch cutouts. Unfortunately, Nissan hasn’t divulged exactly how much power the system generates, but it’s sure to be a good deal more than the Frontier’s stock 310 ponies.
More power is great, but it’s important to have somewhere to use it. While Nissan could have opted to make the Ronin a rock-crawling beast, the build sheet suggests the truck is better suited as a desert runner, like a Ford Ranger Raptor. Nissan reached into the parts bin for the larger Titan’s rear axle as well as its suspension for a bit of further modification.
The Ronin benefits from a Bilstein Black Hawk suspension package with four-way adjustable coil-overs and internal hydraulic bump stops, integrated rebound cut-off, and individual high- and low-speed compression, rebound, and bypass damping adjustments.
