This three-row 4x4 could be a legitimate 4Runner or Land Cruiser competitor once Mitsubishi officially decides to revive the Montero and bring this off-roader to the U.S.
Mitsubishi’s new Pajero SUV looks like a legitimate competitor to the Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser, now that we have the full specs on this new off-road-oriented SUV. It’s set to go on sale in Japan next month, and while Mitsubishi says it still hasn’t reached a decision about U.S. availability, its dimensions and pricing put it in line with Toyota’s popular mid-size SUVs.
The Pajero measures 193.7 inches long, 75.8 inches wide, and 75.2 inches tall. Those measurements are all within a few inches of the 4Runner, though the Mitsu is narrower overall. It has three rows of seats and seating for seven, and it’s built on a ladder frame and has standard four-wheel drive.

The powertrain for the Japanese market is a 2.4-liter turbo-diesel inline-four with 201 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. That engine is unlikely to make its way to the U.S., but we do like the idea of a torquey diesel off-roader with decent fuel economy—Mitsubishi claims 28 mpg on the WLTP cycle.
Though Japan-market pricing isn’t an indicator of what this model could cost if it comes to the States, we do know that the Pajero starts at the equivalent of $39,000 and goes up to $50,000 for the loaded Super Exceed trim level pictured here.
