Maruti Suzuki bets on green hydrogen to cut factory emissions

Maruti Suzuki has commissioned a 300 kW green hydrogen pilot at its Manesar plant, adding another clean-energy layer to its manufacturing operations. The automaker says the project will be used to blend hydrogen with natural gas, improve solar utilisation and support a wider emissions-reduction plan across Haryana and Gujarat.

Maruti Suzuki has taken a fresh step in its manufacturing decarbonisation plan by commissioning a pilot green hydrogen facility at its Manesar plant in Haryana . The move, reported by Moneycontrol , adds a new fuel pathway to the automaker's energy mix as Indian manufacturers face growing pressure to cut emissions without disrupting production schedules.

The 300 kW electrolyser will generate green hydrogen on site and feed it into existing operations after blending with natural gas. The setup is also designed to make better use of solar power generated at the facility, linking renewable electricity with industrial heat requirements in a single production system.

The company said the plant is a pilot project, but the implications go beyond a single unit in one factory. If the trial performs as expected, learnings from Manesar could be used to expand green hydrogen adoption across manufacturing sites in Haryana and Gujarat . That would place the automaker among the early industrial users in India trying to move hydrogen from policy ambition to practical factory fuel.

Green hydrogen is produced using renewable electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, unlike conventional hydrogen that is often linked to fossil fuels.
