Jeep’s Latest Wrangler Reimagines the Original CJ-2A

The Wrangler JL-2A brings back the iconic orange wheels and military-inspired looks of Jeep’s first civilian model.

Jeep is digging way back in the archives for its latest “Twelve 4 Twelve” drop. This time, the brand is taking inspiration from the first-ever civilian Jeep, the Willys CJ-2A. The original CJ-2A was released in July 1945, based on the Willys MB that the U.S. military used during World War II. The modified military vehicle soon found a home in farming and ranching environments.

Today’s Wranglers carry a similar capable spirit, albeit they’re notably cushier than the first post-war iteration. They’ve also expanded beyond the farming and ranching bubble, with Jeep selling over 5 million Wranglers across more than 80 years. Now, the 2027 Jeep Wrangler JL-2A takes iconic imagery from the original and blends it with the current Wrangler’s creature comforts.

The inaugural CJ-2As rolled out in either a warm tan or olive green color, and they were the first to feature the now-iconic seven-slot grille. The new JL-2A follows a similar formula, with the two-door variant painted Gobi, Jeep’s current tan color, and the four-door donning ’41, an olive green shade. Gobi and ‘41 are the obvious picks for the themed release, but both of the JL-2A’s body styles can also come in Bright White, Sting Gray, Ghost, and Joose for a more modern look.

Regardless of the paint job, JL-2A models wear 17-inch retro-style wheels wrapped in standard 33-inch-tall BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrain tires.
