Infineon introduces a high-voltage BMS reference design built around the AURIX TC4x

Infineon has introduced a high-voltage BMS reference design that enables computationally intensive battery models to run directly on the battery management unit (BMU). The design also includes pack and cell monitoring units and a software package for BMS development.

The BMU uses an AURIX TC4x microcontroller and its parallel processing unit (PPU), which Infineon says can deliver up to 30 times the processing performance of a standard CPU. The additional computing capacity supports machine-learning, hybrid, electrochemical and equivalent-circuit models, as well as digital twins.

Infineon says optimized load profiles will extend battery lifetime by up to 30% in various application scenarios. The BMU's modeling capabilities can also allow battery designs with up to 20% fewer cells, or longer driving range with an unchanged battery configuration. The extra processing performance may reduce charging times by up to 20%.

The BMU provides Ethernet, CAN, USB-C and isoUART connectivity, vehicle and laboratory power-supply inputs, MOTIX contactor drivers, an EEPROM, a high-voltage interlock and XENSIV pressure and gas sensors for thermal-runaway detection.

The BMU supports a range of methods for estimating and predicting battery states, including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, open-circuit-voltage measurement, coulomb counting, Kalman filtering and AI-based models. These methods can estimate internal cell temperature, state of charge, state of health, state of power and state of safety, and identify indicators of lithium plating. Earlier detection of conditions associated with thermal runaway can provide additional time for the BMS to initiate preventive or protective measures.

0 and is designed to meet ASIL D. Its pack-level sensing and protection functions include current sensing, high-voltage monitoring up to 1,000 V, isolation-resistance measurement and coulomb counting.
