Hyundai’s long drive in India: 30 years and counting

The Korean carmaker is entering its next phase of growth with the inauguration of its new plant in Pune and massive investments earmarked in a host of areas.

Hyundai marks 30 years in India with its new Pune plant, opening a fresh chapter in manufacturing and exports.

From an unfamiliar Korean brand to Maruti Suzuki’s biggest challenger, Hyundai has survived market headwinds that forced several global automakers to exit India.

With Pune adding capacity and Chennai optimising production, Hyundai is targeting new growth opportunities in technology-led SUVs and connected mobility.

Hyundai inaugurated its Pune plant in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the company’s leadership team.

When Hyundai inaugurated its Pune plant on October 14, it also sent out a message of celebrating 30 years in India . It was way back in May 1996 when the Korean automaker had its groundbreaking ceremony for its Chennai plant. A virtually unknown brand then in a country where Maruti, Premier and Ambassador were the more popular household names, Hyundai has come a long way since then. It was no means an easy feat for any carmaker to have coped with the vicissitudes of a market like India over three decades. Advt

This could not have been borne out more starkly than its new Pune plant which was once home to General Motors before it decided to exit India completely. Prior to this, GM had pulled down the shutters on its Gujarat facility which was acquired by SAIC of China.
