Bhargava says don’t write ‘obituary of small cars’ as Maruti sells nearly 4 lakh units in H1
Maruti Suzuki Chairman said the taxation reforms have revived purchasing aspirations for Indian lower-middle-income households and the lower segments of the middle class, leading to an increase in sales.
It is too early to write off small cars from the Indian market, or so believes Maruti’s Suzuki Chairman R C Bhargava as the country’s largest car manufacturer sold approximately 3.98 lakh small cars during the first half of FY27, while its SUV demand stood at 1.62 lakh units. "There are many people who have been writing the obituary of small cars for the last two or three years, saying that India will only buy cars which are SUVs and have the latest gadgets and everything. The small-car market has grown tremendously," Bhargava said at the company's post-earnings call. Advt
Bhargava said the taxation reforms have revived purchasing aspirations for Indian lower-middle-income households and the lower segments of the middle class, leading to an increase in sales. "It's not as if India has become a market of SUVs. India shows it is still an emerging market for small cars," he added. The Gurgaon-based manufacturer reported a 35.9 per cent increase in its small car domestic sales in the September-ended quarter, while SUV sales grew 68.2 per cent. Along with this, it reported its best-ever quarterly total sales volume of 696,654 units in Q2 FY27, marking a 26.5 per cent increase over the year-ago period.
