Mercedes unveiled the high-riding sibling of the AMG GT 4-Door EV on Saturday, simply called the AMG GT SUV. It has enough horsepower to get your groceries home unreasonably quickly, but its most impressive trick might happen while it’s not moving at all. Mercedes claims this electric heavyweight can add 48 kilowatt-hours of energy in five minutes.
Like the 4-Door, the new GT SUV is a bespoke AMG model. It’s built on the same AMG.EA platform, but with a bigger battery, higher peak charging power, and uprated suspension. Three versions will reach U.S. dealerships starting next summer: the GT53, GT55, and GT63.
All have variable all-wheel drive and can mechanically disconnect their front motors to improve efficiency. The GT 53 gets a two-speed rear transmission, while the three-motor versions don’t. Instead, they can control each rear wheel independently, enabling some ultra-sharp torque-vectoring control for hard cornering.
The GT SUV shouts about its presence with a broad grille framed by star-shaped daytime running lights, muscular stick-out wheel arches, and a low fastback-style roof ending in an active spoiler on the GT 55 and GT 63. Six circular taillights give the rear a family resemblance to the four-door, while frameless side windows add a coupe-like touch.
2-inch instrument display, plus an optional second 14-inch screen for the passenger. The chunky center console houses three rotary driving controls, and the panoramic glass roof can switch between transparent and opaque, with illuminated AMG patterns visible at night.
