Nissan introduced the first-generation Pathfinder 40 years ago, and it’s bringing back the OG’s bold red styling.
Nissan has officially sold 2 million Pathfinders since its debut in 1986 for the 1987 model year. After 40 years of production, the Pathfinder is still a solid competitor in the mid-size SUV segment, though it’s grown a bit since its initial days as a compact two-door ute.
To celebrate its 40th birthday, the modern three-row SUV is getting all dressed up. Nissan’s 2027 Pathfinder Special Edition brings back iconic aspects of the first-generation Pathfinder to blend its storied past with the present moment.

The most recognizable throwback appears inside, which is covered in two-tone black-and-burgundy upholstery, similar to the 1987 model’s interior. Everything, from the seats to the door panels, gets a bold, contrasting color treatment. On the passenger-side dashboard, an embossed graphic highlights the Special Edition trim, along with the Pathfinder’s debut date.
The Special Edition treatment is a bit more subtle on the outside. At the front, upper air intakes on the heritage-inspired grille are lined in the same burgundy color as the inside. A badge mirroring the embossed graphic inside the car rests on the exterior C-pillar, and the Pathfinder lettering across the rear features burgundy accents as well.
The anniversary trim also comes with plenty of upgraded equipment, including black 20-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, second-row captain’s chairs, and rear door sunshades.
