A Dutch startup that seeks to produce lab-grown leather at commercial scale has rebranded itself for the next chapter of its growth story: the luxury sector.
Qorium said in a statement on Monday that it will now be called Reyva, positioning itself as a global material brand that can meet the stringent standards of luxury leather, offering the qualities of genuine hides without the animal or environmental cost.
This marks the latest milestone for a startup that has been using science to reimagine a more sustainable and humane future for quality leather. Reyva was co-founded in 2021 by Dr. Mark Post, who developed the world’s first laboratory-grown beef burger more than a decade ago.
It eyed commercialization in 2023 with the appointment of Michael Newton, a former Nike executive, as its CEO. A year later, it unveiled its first proof of concept for full-scale commercialization, a sample of cultivated leather. Measuring 35 by 35 centimeters, the sample opened doors for the startup, including additional funding to bring its product to market.
“Reyva reflects the company we have become: ambitious, design-led and ready to stand alongside the world’s leading material brands,” Newton said in a statement.
“Our science gives us a fundamentally new way to make real leather. Our next chapter is about turning that capability into a material that designers and manufacturers choose for its beauty, consistency and performance, as well as its sustainability credentials,” he said.
