Taobao Tmall World revamped its cross-border shopping platform across international markets on October 15, introducing artificial intelligence curation across a catalog exceeding three billion products.
The overhaul follows a 10 percent year-on-year increase in cross-border shoppers spending more than RMB 500 per order during the 2025 Double 11 shopping festival.
Under the restructuring, Taobao established the Curated Supply System, a framework combining machine-learning models with human review. The system filters merchants and inventory using four benchmarks: product quality, distinctiveness, price competitiveness, and post-sale service. Taobao paired this mechanism with upgraded logistics routing, refreshed international user interfaces, and automated recommendation engines designed to steer overseas buyers toward higher-value Chinese merchandise.
Central to the interface redesign is a dedicated channel called Discover. The section organizes products into 15 themed categories, covering women’s fashion, footwear, menswear, furniture, toys, stationery, pet supplies, fitness equipment, and automotive accessories. When shoppers enter the hub, algorithmic feeds surface specific storefronts and brand narratives rather than raw search results, encouraging visual browsing over keyword queries.
Taobao is rolling out specialized generative software to resolve common pain points in cross-border commerce, particularly size uncertainty and spatial planning. The tools include virtual clothing try-on, virtual makeup simulation, 3D room placement for furniture items, voice-activated search, and interactive pet care manuals. The company also plans to deploy more than 30 conversational AI Lifestyle Experts to assist shoppers with styling and home baking inquiries.
Ye Tian, general manager of Taobao Tmall World, outlined the operational rationale behind the shift to curated inventory.
