Sunday Business News: Supply Side

In this monthly roundup, the global beauty and personal care supply chain continues to undergo significant transformation as ingredient manufacturers, contract producers and specialist suppliers reassess their operations and investment priorities.

Consolidation remains a major theme across Europe’s chemicals industry. BASF reportedly explored a potential deal involving Evonik, highlighting the pressure facing major chemical producers to reassess their business structures amid challenging market conditions. Although no transaction has been confirmed, the reported discussions reflect wider questions surrounding scale, competitiveness and the future configuration of Europe’s speciality chemicals sector, which supplies essential ingredients to the global cosmetics industry.

Manufacturing pressures are also becoming increasingly visible. INEOS idled its acetyls plants in Hull as high European energy costs continued to affect industrial competitiveness. The decision highlights the challenges facing chemical manufacturers operating in energy-intensive industries and raises broader questions about the resilience of European production capacity. For cosmetics manufacturers, developments further upstream in the chemicals supply chain can have implications for raw material availability, sourcing strategies and long-term cost structures.

Portfolio optimisation is another defining theme. Solabia is refocusing its business on cosmetics and nutraceuticals under newly appointed CEO Muriel Koch, signalling a sharper strategic emphasis on markets where scientific expertise and specialised ingredients can deliver competitive advantage. The move reflects the growing convergence between beauty, nutrition and health as ingredient suppliers position themselves around higher-value applications.

Symrise is also reshaping its portfolio through the divestment of its terpene ingredients business to Mutares . The transaction illustrates how established fragrance and ingredient manufacturers are reassessing non-core activities to concentrate resources on strategic growth areas.
