PARIS — Sephora Collection, the beauty retailer’s eponymous line, turns 30 this year and enters a new decade with a four-pronged strategy.
“Sephora is on a winning trajectory for the past few years, in terms of being the leading and the only global beauty retailer,” said Guillaume Motte, chief executive officer of Sephora, adding it now has almost 3,500 stores, 55,000 employees and 80 million consumers. “We are winning share in all our markets.”
Sephora Collection is a crucial component, with industry sources estimating its annual sales alone run northward of 1 billion euros.
“It is a brand which has constantly innovated, made beauty accessible to all and has played a very important dynamic in our trajectory — and that’s still the case,” Motte said. “It’s at the heart of our success.”
Dominique Mandonnaud, who founded Sephora — which is now owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton — in 1969, kicked off Sephora Collection with 365 shades of lipstick.
Another milestone for Sephora Collection came with its introduction of facial masks in the 2010s, before they became the ubiquitous products of today.
Key to Sephora Collection’s success, according to Motte, is the retailer’s 49,000 beauty advisers, who give constant feedback on the product line, based on their own and consumer insights.
“That’s also why the brand is so relevant,” Motte said. “We are talking about a very big brand, global scale, thanks to the Sephora network, the reach that we have and the accessibility of the brand.”
