Private equity and venture capital can accelerate the expansion of India's restaurant businesses, but funding should not become a substitute for profitability, operational discipline and a sustainable growth model. Industry leaders at ET FoodXP 2026 emphasised that restaurant operators must build financially viable businesses capable of generating internal cash flows before depending on external investment to scale.

The discussion took place during the panel PE and Venture Funding in the Restaurant Industry, featuring Amit Bagga, Co-Founder, Daryaganj Restaurants; Abhik Mitra, Operating Partner, Samara Capital & MD/CEO, Paradise FoodCourt Ltd; Kabir Suri, Co-Founder & Director, Azure Hospitality; and Ranjit Paliath, CEO, Lite Bite Foods Pvt Ltd. The session was moderated by Anjan Chatterjee, Chairman & MD, Speciality Restaurants.

The panellists examined how different sources of capital influence business decisions, why investors increasingly seek proven operating models and how restaurant founders can balance expansion ambitions with the financial realities of a capital-intensive industry.

While India's foodservice market offers considerable growth opportunities, speakers cautioned that expanding outlet networks without improving store-level performance could weaken rather than strengthen long-term enterprise value.
