Paymentology has outlined its strategy for the next phase of digital payments in Thailand, where PromptPay handles 2.53 billion transactions a month.
At a Bangkok masterclass, the card issuer processor argued that the next stage of growth will depend less on expanding access to digital payments and more on improving how different payment methods fit into everyday consumer use.
Thailand's payments market has already reached substantial scale. Bank of Thailand figures cited by Paymentology show that PromptPay processed more than THB 4.60 trillion across 2.53 billion transactions in June, underscoring how widely digital payments are used in daily commerce.
Against that backdrop, executives and industry participants discussed how banks, fintechs and other businesses should respond in a market where real-time payments, wallets, cards and other tools now sit alongside one another rather than compete for outright dominance.
The event brought together representatives from banking, fintech, payments and technology, including executives from Paymentology, TrueMoney, T2P, Omise and Asia United Bank.
Michael Sek Pheng Yeo, Associate Research Director, IDC Financial Insights and Retail Insights, Asia Pacific, described Thailand as a market where multiple trends are unfolding at the same time.
"Thailand is a really good example of all the major forces in payments working at once. We see wallets, real-time payments, BNPL, cards, tokenisation and agentic commerce all acting in the market simultaneously. It makes Thailand a great market to see how digital payments are going to evolve and coexist," Yeo said.
That reflects a broader debate in Southeast Asian payments, where providers are trying to determine whether consumers will consolidate around a handful of payment tools or continue to use several in parallel depending on context.
