Nike’s Ultra-shaggy Air Force 1 Is Coming Back in a Deep Red

A growing series of colorways does justice to inspiration from the expression "horse of a different color."

This summer, Nike introduced a new furry take on the Air Force 1 Low with loose inspiration from “The Wizard of Oz” and a debut orange colorway that made comparisons to Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty impossible to avoid. Another version in purple is expected to release during the holiday season, but as the wait for more information remains ongoing, yet another variant has surfaced.

The Nike Air Force 1 Low “Team Red Pony Hair” employs its namesake dark hue across the sneaker without an exception. Pony hair of greater length than usual likewise covers the entirety of the upper, from the base to overlays including Swoosh and mustache. Leather lining brings a more premium interior, with the material used for a tongue patch stitched onto the furry tongue.

Purple and orange versions of the pony hair Air Force 1 Low’s feature white midsoles with the primary color returning for the outsole, so this uniform look veers from the early pattern established.

In its early tease of the shoe on the Snkrs app, Nike cited the expression “horse of a different color” as a a design influence. The idiom is also the name of the color-changing horse that draws the carriage in “The Wizard of Oz,” a phenomenon one could say is being replicated through this series of colorways. One question left, though, is just how many colors this horse of a sneaker will carry.
