A Los Angeles interagency task force uncovered about $1 million in stolen goods from a footwear retail store on Sept. 30, seizing dozens of pallets traced back to stolen railroad cargo.

Detectives served a search warrant at Shoes n Shoes in Whittier, Calif. as part of an investigation resulting in the arrest of a local business owner, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

Officials recovered 59 pallets of merchandise that had been stolen from BNSF Railway and Union Pacific trains, according to police. The seized merchandise included footwear from brands such as Nike, New Balance, Brooks, and Sanuk, Yeti cups and jugs, Shark vacuums and JanSport backpacks.

During the execution of the search warrant, detectives contacted Shoes n Shoes owner Waseem Saman. Saman admitted to purchasing much of his inventory from brokers or middlemen, which the department identified as illegitimate distributors of the brands.

Saman was arrested and booked at Van Nuys Jail on suspicion of receiving stolen property under California Penal Code 496(a), according to the department’s Tuesday news release.

The LAPD has not named the brokers or middlemen who allegedly supplied the Whittier store and the District Attorney’s office has not announced charges. Authorities have not disclosed how long the alleged theft operation had been under investigation prior to the search warrant execution.
